Visit of WHO representatives as part of the certification of “Torlak” Institute as a reference institution in Serbia for the storage and disposal of poliovirus

The Acting Director of the Institute of Virology, Vaccines and Sera “Torlak” prof. Dr. Darija Kisić spoke with representatives of the World Health Organization team about the certification process of “Torlak” Institute as the only reference institution in Serbia for the storage and disposal of poliovirus.

Prof. Dr. Darija Kisić pointed out that “Torlak” Institute had a very long tradition of producing vaccines against poliomyelitis (polio) and recalled that the first poliovirus vaccine was manufactured at “Torlak” Institute in 1961.

Acting director of “Torlak” Institute, prof. Dr. Darija Kisić and WHO representatives agreed that the common goal of both institutions is to contribute to global efforts to completely eradicate poliovirus, with special reference to the safe disposal and storage of the said virus.

In addition to representatives of the World Health Organization, representatives of the National Authority for Poliovirus Containment and the Working Group for Retention and Storage of Poliovirus attended the meeting.
